Mitch Martin is a Pastoral Ministries Specialist in LifeWay Church Resources of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. In this role he networks with leadership development experts all across America at seminaries, state conventions, conference centers, churches, and associations.
Previously, he was Dr. Jimmy Draper’s assistant in the Younger Leader Initiative. Earlier, he was an Editor-in-Chief in Adult Leadership Publishing.
In addition to his work at LifeWay, Martin is the pastor of Westwood Baptist Church in Nashville. This congregation in a declining neighborhood has nearly doubled since Martin became pastor.
Martin, a native of Oklahoma, is a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He also holds Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, California.
Prior to joining LifeWay in 2002, Martin was the Missions and Leadership Development Consultant for the Utah-Idaho Southern Baptist Convention, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Martin has published numerous articles and is working to publish his first
book on spiritual formation.
Bivocational ministry is predicated on the reality that people called of God must also work secular jobs to help support their ministries. The basic difference between, “full support,” and “bivocational” ministry is that a full support pastor’s financial needs are supplied by the church which allows them to do the work of the church. On the other hand a bivocational servant provides their own support in order to build the church. In either case there is no superior ministry, only people committed to doing whatever it takes to fulfill God’s kingdom priorities.
With the continued growth of Bivocational Ministry across our nation there is a vital need for these ministers to find an avenue of connectedness. The basic reason is that Bivocational Ministers find their ministry involving two or more vocational expressions therefore making it difficult to connect with fellow ministers.
• It is part of the National Bivocational Council which is composed of SBBMA, along with “Association of Educators” which is composed of college, university and seminary leadership who have a passion for a variety of training opportunities for Bivocational ministers.
• Also we have a “National Resource Network” composed of leadership from our state conventions who have responsibility of working with our Bivocational ministers, along with leadership from our various national agencies.
